Russia assessed Ukraine’s possible boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games

Vasilyev: other countries may follow Ukraine’s initiative to boycott the 2024 Games

Two-time Olympic champion in biathlon Dmitry Vasiliev assessed Ukraine’s possible boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games after the admission of Russians. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Vasilyev believed that other countries could follow Ukraine’s initiative to boycott the tournament, turning it into a mechanism for resolving political issues. He noted that Russia is “absolutely neither cold nor hot” from the non-participation of foreign teams.

“If the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach and others like him strictly adhered to the Olympic charter, then countries that declared non-participation in the Games would be disqualified for two Olympic terms, as prescribed in the charter,” Vasiliev said.

On December 8, the IOC announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Games in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support the SVO, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed.

After this, Ukraine stated that they did not exclude the option of boycotting the 2024 Games, and added that they would make a decision on participation in the tournament later.
