The Santos football club, for which Pele played, left the top division of the Brazilian championship for the first time in history. This is reported by G1.

At the end of the season, the team took 17th place and was relegated to the second league. After the last round match, fans staged pogroms in the vicinity of the club’s home stadium. Fans threw stones and Molotov cocktails at police, set buses and ambulances, buildings and signs on fire.

The police had to intervene in the riots. Law enforcement officers responded with stun grenades and tear gas. Helicopters and cavalry were also involved in resolving the situation.

Santos was founded in 1912. The team became the champion of Brazil eight times and the winner of the Libertadores Cup three times. In addition to Pele, Neymar played for the club.
