Cyclist Danila Burlakov was denied neutral status due to military service
The International Cycling Union (UCI) has refused to allow Russian cyclist Danila Burlakov to obtain neutral status. The athlete’s coach Vladimir Khozov reported this to TASS.
According to the specialist, the decision was made after the UCI asked the athlete to provide a certificate stating that he has no relation to the CSKA society. “Burlakov indicated that for a year he was a conscript soldier in the CSKA sports company, and military service in Russia is mandatory for all men,” Khozov said.
23-year-old Burlakov is the winner of the 2018 European Junior Championships in track cycling in the team sprint. In 2023, in the same discipline, he won gold medals at the Russian Championship and Cup.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. However, athletes associated with the armed forces or security forces of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
