Irina Slutskaya considered it unworthy to discuss the American figure skater Malinin
Two-time world champion Irina Slutskaya refused to answer questions about American figure skater Ilya Malinin. Her words are quoted by “Championship”.
The former athlete considered it unworthy to discuss an American athlete. “I love my country very much and I think that ours are still the best. Whatever they are, they are still the best,” she said.
Malinin was born in the USA into the family of figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov. The athletes are natives of Russia; in the 1990s they began representing the Uzbekistan national team; since 1998 they have lived in the United States. Ilya Malinin is the first figure skater in history to successfully perform a quadruple axel in competition.
On March 1, 2022, the International Skating Union banned Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Due to sanctions, skaters were unable to take part in the World and European Championships, as well as in other international tournaments. In this regard, it was decided to hold the Russian Grand Prix.
