Alexander Ovechkin said that the NHL business was built around him and Sidney Crosby
Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin spoke about the contribution to the development of the National Hockey League (NHL), which he made together with Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby. His words are quoted by Sport Express.
“We became the two faces of the league, and that built the business. An advertising campaign was built around Sydney and me, which attracted fans and the press,” explained the hockey player.
Ovechkin previously said that he and Crosby saved the NHL. “Now a new generation has arrived, and I believe that we are already old,” the Russian added.
Ovechkin has been playing in the NHL since 2005, and throughout his overseas career he has played for Washington. Together with the team, the Russian won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
Crosby made his NHL debut the same season as Ovechkin. The Canadian is a three-time Stanley Cup winner with Pittsburgh.
