Minister of Sports of Ukraine Bedny spoke about cases of athletes fleeing abroad
Acting Minister of Sports and Youth of Ukraine Matvey Bedny spoke about cases of mass exodus of local athletes when traveling abroad. His words are quoted by Le Monde.
“There are cases when a team in one sport left and they all just ran away. And they say they won’t come back,” Bedny recalled, refusing to name the sport. He emphasized that for this, athletes will be disqualified and deprived of sports titles, since this is a betrayal of coaches and the country.
On September 8, the representative of the country’s government in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnichuk, said that Ukrainian sports federations would be punished if they showed solidarity with the Russians. He indicated that federations would begin to be deprived of national status if athletes, coaches and other members of federations commit actions that undermine the authority of Ukraine.
In July, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine allowed Ukrainian athletes to take part in international competitions in which Russian and Belarusian athletes compete in a neutral status. It is noted that the ban on the participation of national teams from Ukraine continues to apply to tournaments in which athletes from Russia and Belarus compete under their own flags.
