Fetisov: believed that the NHL would be able to withstand political pressure
Two-time Olympic champion and State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov appreciated the reluctance of the National Hockey League Players’ Union (NHLPA) to see Russians at the 2025 World Cup. His words are quoted by TASS.
Fetisov said that until recently he believed that the NHL would be able to withstand political pressure. “I was very upset by and large, but nothing can be done about it. The rights of athletes are being violated,” he added. The deputy emphasized that such situations could not be imagined before.
On November 21, NHLPA director Marty Walsh said that the Russians will not take part in the 2025 World Cup. The reason was that many federations do not allow their players to participate in the tournament with the Russians.
Prior to this, the two countries opposed the invitation of the Russian team to the World Cup. Sweden announced that it was impossible to play against the Russians. Finland called for a boycott of the tournament if the Russian team was admitted.
The World Cup is an international tournament that has been held three times (in 1996, 2004 and 2016). In 2025, the teams of Canada, Finland, Sweden and the USA will take part in it.
