Northug to frostbitten skier Halvarsson: welcome to the club
Two-time Olympic champion in cross-country skiing, Norwegian Petter Northug, turned to Swede Kalle Halvarsson, who suffered frostbite to his genitals during a World Cup race. His words are quoted by TV2.
“Welcome to the club. I hope everything goes faster for Kalle than for me,” Northug wished the skier recovery. The athlete advised Halvarsson to put on windproof pants, secure them with tape and lubricate them with silicone gel. He stated that he had experienced this himself, and recalled sitting at press conferences after winning races and enduring the pain.
On November 26, Halvarsson admitted after a 20-kilometer mass start in the Finnish city of Ruka that he had suffered frostbite on his genitals. The temperature during the race dropped to minus 15 degrees.
In April 2022, Brazilian football player Malcolm, who at that time played for Zenit St. Petersburg, spoke about the difficulties of playing in Russia. The midfielder said that he was afraid of getting frostbite during winter matches.
