Russian chess player Grebnev won the World Under-18 Championship
Russian chess player Alexey Grebnev won ahead of schedule the world championship among youth under 18, which is taking place in Montesilvano, Italy. The results are available on the tournament website.
In the tenth round, Grebnev defeated the Indian Pranit Vuppalu and scored 9.5 points, securing the final victory before the last day of competition. In total, the chess player won nine victories and played one game in a draw. In second place is another Russian, Volodar Murzin, who has eight points.
President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrei Filatov congratulated Grebnev on his victory. “This is a phenomenal result for a tournament of this level, I congratulate its coaches and all chess lovers in our country,” he said.
On November 23, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) extended permission for Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete under the organization’s flag. Athletes will be able to play under the organization’s flag until January 1, 2025. The permission applies to those who are already performing in a neutral status.
