Mexican Ambassador to Russia Mejias allowed the match with the Russian national team to be held in 2024
The Ambassador of Mexico to Russia, Eduardo Villegas Mejias, assessed the possible holding of a friendly match between the countries’ football teams. RIA Novosti reports this.
He admitted that such a meeting was quite possible next year. “Much will depend on the federations. We know that politics currently affects sporting events. In Mexico, we also oppose the politicization of sports,” Mejias said.
The Russian national team played its last friendly match on November 20 in Volgograd. Valery Karpin’s team defeated Cuba with a score of 8:0.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team has lost the opportunity to fight for access to the finals of major tournaments.
