President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich named the reasons for the loss of the Russian grandmaster Jan Nepomniachtchi to the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the fight for the world champion title. His words are quoted by Gazeta.Ru.
“Unfortunately, Ian did not have enough strength, emotions, or experience in wrestling in conditions of lagging behind in the score. Against the background of fatigue and psychological discomfort, three grave mistakes were made, ”Dvorkovich explained. He added that it was impossible to predict the outcome of the last games.
At the same time, the FIDE President noted that the outcome of the first seven games was quite expected. It was not possible to identify the strongest in five games; in the sixth meeting, Nepomniachtchi lost to Carlsen. The seventh game, which ended in a draw, Dvorkovich called a necessary respite for the Russian.
In the fight for the world chess crown, Carlsen outplayed Nepomniachtchi with a score of 7.5: 3.5. The Norwegian achieved an early victory in 11 games, the last of which took place on December 10. The defeat of the Russian grandmaster in the decisive match of the World Championship was the largest since 1993.
