NHLPA Director Walsh said that the Russians will not take part in the 2025 World Cup
The National Hockey League Players’ Union (NHLPA) has revealed its position on the participation of the Russian national team in the 2025 World Cup. The words of executive director Marty Walsh are quoted by Daily Faceoff.
Walsh said that, most likely, the Russian team will miss the tournament. “In this case we are talking about a more serious problem. There are federations that do not allow their players to participate in a tournament with Russians. You have to take all of this into account,” he explained.
As it became known, the teams of Canada, Finland, Sweden and the USA will take part in the tournament, which is scheduled for February 2025. The organizers – the NHL and NHLPA – want to hold matches in Europe.
Previously, the two countries opposed the invitation of the Russian team to the World Cup. Sweden announced that it was impossible to play against the Russians. Finland called for a boycott of the tournament if the Russian team was admitted.
The World Cup is an international tournament that has been held three times (in 1996, 2004 and 2016). The last time the Canadian team became the champion.
