IOC head Thomas Bach: federations should not suspend Russia because of the ROC decision
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, made a statement about the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. It is available on the organization’s website.
Bach explained that the decision is based on the actions of the ROC, but it does not mean that international federations should automatically suspend Russian sports federations. “This is decided by the international federation on a case-by-case basis, studying the situation taking into account its charter,” he emphasized.
On November 6, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) registered the ROC’s appeal against the IOC’s decision to suspend membership in the organization. The court said in a statement that the arbitration award will be final and binding, but the parties have the right to appeal.
On October 12, the IOC suspended the ROC until further notice due to the inclusion of representatives of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into the organization. The committee’s communications director, Mark Adams, explained that the ROC can no longer act as a national Olympic committee and receive funds from the IOC.
