The NOC of Great Britain supported the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Olympics
Executive Director of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Great Britain Andy Anson spoke about the possible participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2024 Games in Paris. Sky Sports reports this.
According to him, athletes from these countries should be allowed to compete in a neutral status. “Let’s not forget that the Russians are suspended from many competitions that qualify for the Games, so few will be able to qualify. We don’t want athletes to be punished all the time for what’s going on in the world,” Anson added.
On November 3, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of segregation based on nationality. “We demand that international sports organizations adhere to the letter and norms of the provisions of the Olympic Charter, remembering the principle of “sport is outside politics,” the department added.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions. The decision on countries’ admission to the 2024 Olympics has not yet been made.
