ESPN included Usman and Umar Nurmagomedov among promising MMA fighters
Russian fighters Usman and Umar Nurmagomedov were included in the list of new promising names in mixed martial arts (MMA) according to ESPN. The list of athletes is presented on the publication’s website.
In the publication’s material, each promising fighter was compared with an MMA legend of the past. Usman was compared to former champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Canadian Georges St-Pierre and Russian Valentina Shevchenko, and Umar was compared to the current lightweight champion of the promotion, Russian Islam Makhachev.
Usman and Umar are cousins of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. In November 2022, Usman became the Bellator lightweight champion by defeating Brazilian Patrick Freire via unanimous decision. In total, the 25-year-old Russian won 18 victories in his professional career without suffering a single defeat.
Umar signed a contract with the UFC in September 2022. On the night of August 6, 2023, he was supposed to lead a promotion tournament for the first time in his career in a fight against American Corey Sandhagen, but withdrew due to injury. He has 16 wins and no losses in MMA.
