French runner Mekhissi-Benabbad apologizes for comparing Netanyahu to Hitler
Multiple European running champion Mahidin Mekhissi-Benabbad compared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Nazi Germany leader Adolf Hitler. His words are quoted by Marca.
The athlete said that the comparison is that Hitler committed genocide, as Netanyahu does. In his opinion, world powers can stop what is happening. Mekhissi-Benabbad later apologized for his words, emphasizing that he reacted too emotionally.
French Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera criticized the runner’s words. She stated that his comparisons distance the runner from the universal human values of the world. “Sport will always defend the values of Olympism that you represent for many of our compatriots,” she addressed Mekhissi-Benabbad.
The runner is of Algerian origin, but has represented the French national team throughout his career. He has two silver and one bronze Olympic medals in the 3000m steeplechase.
