David Hurtado, of Ecuador, won the men’s 20km walk at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games this Sunday, in an event marked by the retirement of champion and Lima 2019 favourite, his compatriot Brian Daniel Pintado.

Hurtado clocked 1:19:20 and dominated the competition at Parque O’Higgins. Silver was won by Brazilian Caio Bonfim with a time of 1:19:24, and bronze by Mexican Andrés Olivas with a time of 1:19:56.

While his compatriot Pintado retired after covering 13 kilometers.

The event began marred by controversy following Peru’s Kimberly García’s victory in the women’s 20km walk, in testing whose times were overturned due to a route measurement error, later corrected for the men’s race. (D)
