Former goalkeeper of the Russian national football team Igor Akinfeev called the 2014 World Cup in Brazil the most difficult moment in his career. His words are quoted by Sports.ru.
“When I missed that goal from South Korea, while still lying in the goal I understood that they would trample, beat and destroy. There was not a single chance for another scenario,” the athlete shared.
The goalkeeper said that after that he did not appear in public places for a month and psychologically worked through the current situation. “If I hadn’t let go of 2014, I would have gone crazy somewhere in Kashchenko. And finished with football. But I’m back,” Akinfeev noted. He emphasized that you shouldn’t turn into a weakling because of mistakes; it’s important to be able to overcome difficulties.
At the 2014 World Cup, the Russian team led by Italian Fabio Capello took third place in Group H and failed to reach the playoffs. The team drew with South Korea (1:1) and Algeria (1:1), and also lost to Belgium (0:1).
