Russian fighter accused of justifying terrorism declares innocence

MMA fighter Yakubov, accused of justifying terrorism, declared his innocence in court

Russian mixed style (MMA) fighter Ilyas Yakubov commented on the charges brought against him for publicly justifying terrorism. His words are reported by the Mash Telegram channel.

Yakubov stated in court, where he was taken on October 23, that he did not admit his guilt. “I didn’t do anything. I’m not a criminal, I’m an athlete,” the fighter emphasized.

On October 22, the capital’s main headquarters of the Investigative Committee of Russia announced the detention of Yakubov, who had previously been put on the wanted list. According to law enforcement officers, the fighter was arrested for making and publicly distributing a video with statements justifying the need to carry out terrorist activities.

According to lawyer Maxim Kalinov, Yakubov faces from five to seven years in prison.

Yakubov has 12 wins and four losses in MMA. His fight against Vyacheslav Vasilevsky was planned for October 27 as part of the REN TV Fight Club, however, as the organizers reported to TASS, it was cancelled.
