The IOC rejected Putin’s accusations of ethnic discrimination against Russian athletes
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) responded to the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin about ethnic discrimination against Russian and Belarusian athletes, rejecting his accusations. NTB reports this.
“We strongly reject allegations that these measures constitute ‘ethnic discrimination,'” the organization said. The IOC noted that the recommendations published in March are a response to the violation of the Olympic Charter by the authorities of Russia and Belarus.
On October 19, Putin called the exclusion of athletes from Russia ethnic discrimination. “We learned that an invitation to the Games is not an unconditional right for the best athletes, but a kind of privilege, and it can be earned not by sports results, but by some kind of political gestures,” the president said.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions.
