Tretyak: Russian hockey players will not return to tournaments during a special operation
The head of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF), Vladislav Tretyak, named the condition for the return of Russians to international tournaments. His words are quoted by Match TV.
Tretyak said that until the end of the special military operation in Ukraine, domestic athletes will not be able to take part in either the world championships or other international competitions. “But we can continue to play with the Belarusians,” he emphasized.
On October 5, Tretyak said that the Russian Hockey Federation sent a letter to the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) with a request to allow Russian youth teams to participate in tournaments. He expressed hope that the IIHF will follow the example of the International Football Federation (FIFA), which proposed the return of Russian youth football teams to tournaments.
The IIHF suspended the Russian and Belarusian national teams from participating in competitions under its auspices in February 2022. Russia was also deprived of the right to host the 2023 World Cup and the World Youth Championship.
