Putin called the removal of athletes from Russia ethnic discrimination
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the exclusion of country representatives from international sporting competitions. RIA Novosti reports this.
He called it ethnic discrimination. “We learned that an invitation to the Olympics is not an unconditional right of the best athletes, but a kind of privilege and it can be earned not by sports results, but by some kind of political gestures,” Putin said.
On September 13, Putin said that Russian athletes should make their own decision about participating in the Olympics in 2024. “Of course, we must first of all be guided by the interests of athletes in this situation,” said the head of state.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee recommended that Belarusians and Russians who did not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended to be excluded from participation in competitions.
