Stanislav Pozdnyakov is confident that sanctions on Russian sports will be lifted by 2028
The head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), Stanislav Pozdnyakov, discussed the timing of lifting sanctions from Russian sports. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Our goal is to take a leading place among the participants in the 2028 Olympics. Let me emphasize that our goal is not participation, but victory,” Pozdnyakov said, expressing confidence that by this time the sanctions will be lifted. He noted that the situation with the admission of Russians to tournaments is already changing.
On October 12, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the ROC until further notice due to the inclusion of representatives of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in the organization. “The ROC can no longer act as a National Olympic Committee and receive funds from the IOC,” explained IOC Communications Director Mark Adams. However, no final decision has been made on the participation of Russians in the 2024 Games.
On March 28, the IOC recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. However, athletes associated with the armed forces or security forces of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
