UFC accuses USADA of libel over McGregor situation

UFC threatens USADA with libel suit over Conor McGregor situation

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has threatened to sue the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for defamation. ESPN reports this.

“The UFC has the right to bring a claim when defamatory comments negatively impact its reputation, integrity and honesty, which is what happened in this case,” the UFC said in a statement to USADA. The promotion also said it would operate its own independent anti-doping program, led by former FBI agent George Piro.

The reason for what happened is the situation with former UFC champion Conor McGregor. The Irishman returned to the testing pool in October after a long layoff. According to USADA rules, McGregor must be under control for at least six months before fighting. However, the UFC is ready to give him a chance to fight in December.

Against this background, USADA announced the end of cooperation with the UFC in 2024. “The long-term health and safety of fighters—in addition to a fair and level playing field—is more important to USADA than short-term profits,” the organization said.
