European champion, ex-athlete of the Russian national team Victoria Slivko shared her opinion on the development of biathlon in the country. Her words are quoted by Sports.ru.
“Is the biathlon dying? I don’t see where and in what region it is developing, ”Slivko said. She noted that there are almost no female athletes under 26 years old, and this may negatively affect the team’s results in the future.
The biathlete shared that she was upset by the number of female athletes participating in domestic competitions. “Last season we were in Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk, where 15 people took part in personal races. There is an individual race in Tchaikovsky – 31 participants, ”Slivko said. She noted that at the same time, at least 60 athletes compete at the Izhevsk Rifle, which is a selection for international starts.
Since 2015, Slivko has been training as part of the main women’s national team of Russia. In 2016, she became the winner of the European Championship. In the current season, the athlete did not qualify for the national team and competes at the stages of the Russian Cup.
