Matytsin called UEFA’s decision to not allow youth teams to politicize sports
Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin appreciated the non-admission of Russian youth football teams to international tournaments. His words are quoted by TASS.
Matytsin called the cancellation of UEFA’s decision to admit Russian teams under 17 years of age the politicization of sports. “Apparently, influence and pressure from many countries, unfortunately, led to the decision to change this position,” he said.
On October 10, it became known that the decision of the UEFA executive committee on the admission of Russian national teams among players under 17 years of age to international tournaments was canceled. UEFA First Vice-President Karl-Erik Nilsson explained that it was not practical to return Russian teams.
On September 26, the UEFA Executive Committee proposed allowing Russian youths to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. After this, some countries, including Ukraine and England, announced their intention to boycott matches with Russian teams.
