Yes, Dariusz Mioduski wastes money in Legia. Time to say goodbye

Dariusz Mioduski has been in Legia for almost 10 years. First, he was a member of the supervisory board, then one of the co-owners. In March 2017, he bought shares from Bogusław Leśnodorski and Maciej Wandzl, becoming the sole owner of Legia.

Hopes for his person were high among Legia’s fans. The club was taken over by a man from big business, who worked, among others at Kulczyk Investments – a person with such achievements was to guarantee the professional management of Legia. There were voices that “a great new chapter in the history of Legia” was about to begin.

Mioduski decided that he would be the president of the club. He had no experience in managing a football club on his own, but you could count on him to surround himself with competent associates whom he would listen to. It seemed that he had acquired this skill in business, where he worked at a high level and had many people under him.

Football is a business unlike any other

It also seemed that since Mioduski had been involved in Legia before, he understood that a great club (as on a Polish scale) was not only a great tradition, but also a great responsibility. It’s not an ordinary business like any other. The problems of a given company are a worry for the owner and employees. The fans are also worried about the problems of the football club.

Football is also an extremely unpredictable business. Injuries, worse form of players, draw of rivals, referees’ mistakes – the president of the club is not fully responsible for the team’s results, he simply has no influence on some issues. On the other hand, the CEO should minimize the risk of failure, not increase it. And this is exactly what Mioduski can be accused of – his decisions messed up, pushed Legia into the unknown.

First of all, those related to coaches. In recent years, the president of Legia has employed almost all trainers with no experience or with a dubious reputation. The fans saw it, journalists doubted it, and Mioduski risked it. And yet Legia is not just any club to be treated as a guinea pig, as a springboard for less experienced coaches, such as Dean Klafurić, Aleksander Vuković, or the current Marek Gołębiewski.

Romeo Jozak could be an interesting solution for the position of director of the academy, but why the idea that after years of working in the offices of Dinam Zagreb would successfully lead the Warsaw team from the bench? What was the reason for believing that Ricardo are Pinto will change in Legia? The Portuguese has led 14 teams so far. He did not work for more than a year in any of them – in Legia, with which he signed a three-year contract, he also did not work for a year – was it so difficult to predict?

So far, Czesław Michniewicz has been the only recognized coach with experience employed by Dariusz Mioduski. And it was this coach who was the first in five years to introduce Legia to the group stage of the European cups. Case? Moreover, Michniewicz’s team secured the national championship for three rounds before the end of the 2020/2021 season. Earlier, during the term of Mioduski, Legia won the title by a throw to the tape, ahead of Lech Poznań (2019/2020) and Jagiellonia Białystok (2017/2018, 2016/2017). She reached for the titles in great pain.

Despite this, the president of Legia fired Czesław Michniewicz. Of course, he had the right to do so, because the team under his leadership presented dramatically this season. However, if you fire a coach, you must have a plan of who to replace him. Meanwhile, Gołębiewski came for Michniewicz, with no experience at the highest level in Poland. Another big risk turned against the CEO. How was the reserve coach supposed to get the national champion’s team out of the hole?

It is hard to shake off the impression that the coaches in Legia are chosen completely by accident. There is no guiding principle or strategy in it. The only common denominator of most trainers is the lack of experience generating a huge risk of failure.

Questions about transfers

A separate topic is transfers: the time they are carried out and the quality of the imported players. Legia will not be a club ready to keep its best players for a long time. Therefore, it should be prepared to quickly replace them with players who guarantee the appropriate level. It happens differently, and the best proof is the last summer transfer window. How are the players recently brought in by Legia doing?

Igor Charatin does not stand out, instead of Lindsay Rose, the coaches prefer to put even a warehouse worker in the center of defense, Jurgen Celhaka was famous only for refusing to play in the reserves, because it insulted his dignity, Yuri Ribeiro and Joel Abu Hanna are still puzzles, Josue He is not the second Vadis, Mahir Emreli has shot only in Europe (until now), we are still waiting for Mattias Johansson’s better performances, and only Maik Nawrocki is defending himself, despite his costly mistake with Spartak. And there is Lirim Kastrati, whose president called the fastest winger in Europe – a comment on this is probably unnecessary.

Of course, the sports director Radosław Kucharski is responsible for the transfers, but he was also hired by Mioduski and he, as the president, is responsible for the overall performance. In an interview with fans on Twitter, Mioduski admitted on Tuesday: “Kucharski is honest, competent, has an eye for footballers, but also has a communication problem, for which I fuck him from time to time because I get pissed off myself.” Sounds like a description of a scout, but not a sports director of a seemingly serious club.

“I have a diagnosis of what happened and who is responsible for it. 90 percent of it is the training staff that was in Legia”. Dariusz Mioduski is probably very naive if he believes that anyone will believe such stories. Coach Michniewicz is not without fault, but blaming him with almost all responsibility for the current mess is a misunderstanding.

Hitting Michniewicz

It was Mioduski who hired Michniewicz, so if the coach did not prove himself, part of the fault is also borne by the president who employs him. There was no chemistry between them for a long time. “Michniewicz has a lot of experience and knowledge, but he is preparing for the European cups for the first time. As a club, we gave him guidelines that training should start between June 2 and 4, to have 5 weeks to prepare. However, the coach postponed the date to June 7, and finally extended the leave of some key players, knowing that a few others are in the squad and will not train with us from the beginning. These are his decisions and he takes responsibility for them. “.

It turned out, however, Michniewicz knew what he was doing and advanced to the group stage of the Europa League. Now he is accused of having prepared the team badly. We can partially agree with this, because the players who impressed last season (eg Tomas Pekhart, Filip Mladenović) have recently cut their flights. But the whole responsibility, which Mioduski is trying to do, cannot by any means be placed on him. How was Michniewicz supposed to prepare the players who were brought in just before the closing of the transfer window, since the team went through the preparatory period at the turn of June and July, because it started the fight for European cups very early?

It’s hard to get a handle on all of this

In turn, when the president of Legia tries to plead guilty, it turns out that it is probably better to skip the next approach. : “It can be said that a potential mistake that I take on the chest was hiring trainers primarily for the result, under the pressure of time, the media and various types of experts (…). This was also the case with coach Czesław Michniewicz, who had the right workshop after all and experience. ”

Two questions regarding the above statement: what experts or media advised the employment of Jozak, Sa Pinto, Klafuric or Gołębiewski? Secondly, was it Michniewicz who had the appropriate experience (words from the president in November) or did he not (June)? Because it’s hard to understand all of this. Dariusz Mioduski can conjure reality, blame others, but he is responsible for the mess that reigns in Legia Warsaw.

If the president of the Polish champions does not change his approach to coaches, and nothing indicates it, it is difficult to advise Marek Papszun to accept a job offer at Łazienkowska. It seems that the potentially big money may not compensate for the emotions associated with cooperation with the current president of Legia. In addition, Raków itself looks like a more serious project than the one from Warsaw. Pity the nerves.

Diplomatic troubles

It seemed that Dariusz Mioduski, who was coming from big business, would choose his words skillfully so as not to alienate his colleagues from other clubs. The reality turned out to be different. Two years ago, he said, inter alia, : “Let these players go to Legia or Lech before they go abroad, because very often they are not ready for it yet. And the right contracts may allow these clubs to earn even better with subsequent transfers.” k: “In the history of Polish football there are clubs that are more meritorious than Legia, with more trophies and brands. It’s not that there is only Legia and nothing for a long, long time.”

The recent confusion with Marek Papszun is another example of how Dariusz Mioduski spoils his relations with others. – The president of Legia very often publicly emphasizes the importance of respect between the clubs of the Ekstraklasa in order to build a strong league together. However, I perceive these words as a complete denial of this attitude – said the owner of Raków Częstochowa, Michał Świerczewski. It is not surprising that Legia is still so disliked in many places in Poland.

To part with Dariusz Mioduski as president

Dariusz Mioduski responds to the criticism: “It is easy to dispose of other people’s money. I encourage all my critics to invest their money in football.” I respect anyone who invests money in such a difficult business as football. The problem is that the owner doesn’t help himself with his own decisions. The advisers he hired are not helping him either. With the current management method, he simply wastes money, which he invests himself in the Warsaw club.

An appeal to the head of the Polish champions: as long as it is not too late, it is time to hand over the position of the president to a competent person with experience in managing a football company. It seems that this is the only way to stop this train rushing into the abyss. Dariusz Mioduski as the owner must finally see through his eyes and understand that Dariusz Mioduski as the president is a burden for the capital club.
