Running and antidepressants were equally effective in combating depression
Scientists from the Free University of Amsterdam conducted a study on the effectiveness of antidepressants and exercise in the fight against depression. The results are available on PubMed.
The experiment, which lasted 16 weeks, involved 141 people, of whom 45 took medication and 96 ran. The results showed that both methods had the same effect on mental state.
At the same time, the study revealed that medications and sports have different effects on physical condition. Participants in the experiment who were jogging showed a positive change in the state of the body – weight loss, improvement in blood pressure and heart rate. At the same time, people taking antidepressants showed worsening performance.
Earlier, ultramarathon runner, candidate of medical sciences Alexander Elkonin explained the breathing technique while running. He stated that breathing should be free, deep and rhythmic, with the upper body relaxed.
