Zhurova: UEFA should follow the example of the ATP and WTA on the issue of admitting Russia
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova gave advice to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) after rumors of a review of the decision on the admission of Russian youth teams to tournaments. Her words are quoted by Vprognoze.ru.
Zhurova believed that UEFA should follow the example of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which fined Wimbledon organizers for not allowing Russians to enter. “The problem was immediately resolved. And no one boycotted this decision. This means that in tennis they were able to come to an agreement with everyone,” she emphasized.
On October 9, The Independent reported on the possibility of reviewing the decision of the UEFA executive committee on the admission of Russian youth teams to tournaments. It was noted that the decision caused a split in the management of the organization.
On September 26, the UEFA Executive Committee proposed allowing Russian national teams among players under 17 years of age to participate in international tournaments. The organization noted that the proposal includes admission in a neutral status, that is, athletes can receive the right to compete without the flag and anthem. Later, England, Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, Romania and Ukraine announced that their junior teams would refuse matches with Russian teams.
