The Independent: UEFA may reconsider decisions on Russia’s admission to tournaments
It has become known about a possible revision of the decision of the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on the admission of Russian youth teams to tournaments. The Independent reports this.
According to the publication, this decision caused a split in the management of the organization. The head of UEFA, Aleksander Čeferin, is being urged to return to this issue at the next meeting of the union’s executive committee.
On September 26, the UEFA Executive Committee proposed allowing Russian national teams among players under 17 years of age to participate in international tournaments. The organization noted that the proposal includes admission in a neutral status, that is, athletes can receive the right to compete without the flag and anthem. Later, England, Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, Romania and Ukraine announced that their junior teams would refuse matches with Russian teams.
On February 28, 2022, FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team has lost the opportunity to fight for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup.
