Covington believed that Makhachev announced his desire to fight him for the sake of hype
American fighter of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Colby Covington, in an interview with the YouTube channel Submission Radio, appreciated the words of the Russian promotion champion Islam Makhachev about the desire to hold a joint fight.
According to Covington, Makhachev made this statement to attract attention. “He’s not really going to fight. He’s one of those guys who just rants to try and create some buzz. He doesn’t plan to fight. Khabib [Нурмагомедов] did the same,” says the American.

In addition, Covington, who competes in the welterweight division, spoke about his chances of winning the fight with Makhachev. “They know American wrestling is the best. Sambo doesn’t work. He can do it at lightweight. But these are small children,” he said.
On February 12, Makhachev turned out to be stronger than Australian Alexander Volkanovski at the UFC 284 tournament by unanimous decision. He made his first defense of the organization’s lightweight title, won in October.
During his career, 31-year-old Makhachev won 24 victories (12 of them in a row). His only defeat was in a fight with Martins in October 2015. Covington has 17 wins and three losses.
