Mamiashvili said that Ukrainian wrestlers asked not to approach them at the 2023 World Cup
The head of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR), Mikhail Mamiashvili, spoke about behind-the-scenes communication with Ukrainians at the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade. His words are quoted by TASS.
“It was a pity to look at the conditions in which Ukrainian athletes were placed. Ten meters away they said in a half whisper: we hug you, but don’t come closer,” Mamiashvili said. He called the ban on photographs with Russians at award ceremonies flawed. According to the head of the FSBR, Ukrainians are isolated.
At the 2023 World Championships, the Russians competed in neutral status. During the award ceremonies, Ukrainian wrestlers Yaroslav Filchakov and Vasily Mikhailov refused to be photographed with the Russians.
On April 4, the executive committee of the United World of Wrestling decided to allow Russian athletes to participate in international tournaments. It was noted that athletes will be allowed to compete subject to the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee.
