FIFA allowed Russian youth teams to participate in the World Cup, subject to their qualifications
The International Football Federation (FIFA) has allowed Russian teams of players under 17 years of age to participate in tournaments under its auspices. This is reported on the organization’s website.
The condition for Russian participation in world championships will be their qualification through the European Championship. Youth teams will compete under the name “Russian Football Union” in a neutral status, without a flag and an anthem. At the same time, the men’s team will not play at the World Cup, since the tournament will be held in November 2023. The women’s team may qualify for the 2024 tournament.
On September 26, the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) proposed allowing Russian national teams among players under 17 years of age to participate in international tournaments. The organization noted that the proposal includes admission in a neutral status, that is, athletes can receive the right to compete without the flag and anthem.
After this, some countries announced their intention to boycott matches with Russian teams. This decision was announced in England, Ukraine, Poland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway and Romania.
