Belgium’s Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal Quick Step) surprised the favorites with a long-range attack that allowed him to single-handedly win the 102nd edition of the Three Valles Varesinos, a one-day Italian classic held on Tuesday between Busto Arsizi and Varese with a route of 196.54 km.

Among those favorites was Olympic medalist Richard Carapaz, who won second place in the competition, a place he vacated in accordance with Locomotive Carchi.

“There was good planning for this last round of Italian races, I prepared in a very good way and in the end it was a very aggressive race,” he said.

“The winner had a very successful move, as far as I’m concerned, I’m very happy because I’m coming after a very long recovery and winning second place means a lot,” added Carapaz in a conversation with journalists.

The Ecuadorian recognized that he was one of the favorites to win the trial and despite coming second, he insisted on being satisfied with what he had done.

“I feel very good, I’m in good shape, I want to end the year in the best way and we have to think about the next one, which will be very difficult. It was a good team effort and a well-deserved second place for us,” he concluded. (D)
