Marca: the UEFA executive committee will discuss the option of a European Cup format with three divisions
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is thinking about changing the format of European Cups. Marca reports.
According to the source, UEFA representatives at a meeting with the European Club Association (ECA) considered the introduction of three divisions: the Super League, the Europa League and the Candidates League. Four teams will be able to move from the third division to the second, and two from the second to the first.
It is noted that possible changes are planned to be discussed at a meeting in October. However, the innovations will come into force no earlier than 2027.
The new format of the Champions League will begin to operate from the 2024/2025 season. 36 clubs will participate in the main stage. The tournament will be held according to the Swiss system: teams will play eight matches against eight different opponents – four at home and four away.
