Villarreal defeats Atalanta away from home and advances to the last 16 of the Champions League

Villarreal beat Atalanta this Thursday, in Bergamo, by 3 to 2. The game was valid for the last round of the group stage of the Champions League.

The match would be played on Wednesday, like all other games in the round, but it was postponed due to heavy snow that prevented the game from being played on the correct date.

Villarreal’s first goal was scored after just three minutes, with Dutchman Arnaut Danjuma. Visitors increased to 42, with Érienne Capoue. The Spaniards’ third goal was scored six minutes into the second half, again with Danjuma.

Atalanta also slowed down with Ruslan Malinovskyi, 20 minutes later, and with Duván Zapata, in the final stretch. Even with less ball possession and submissions, the Yellow Submarine managed to be more effective within its game proposal.

With this result, the team led by Unai Emery advances to the round of 16 of the competition. Villarreal finished in second place in group F, behind Manchester United, classified in advance.

Atalanta, in turn, finished third and will compete in the Europa League. With six points, Gasperiri’s team was four behind Villarreal.
