Andrei Arshavin called the admission of Russian youth teams to tournaments ambiguous
Former Russian national team player Andrei Arshavin appreciated the proposal of the executive committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to return Russian youth teams to tournaments. His words are quoted by “Championship”.
Arshavin called this move controversial. “If the Russian U17 team is selected somewhere, what should they do in a year? It turns out that they will not be able to play the entire tournament. What’s the point of playing somewhere then?” – he said.
The ex-footballer added that questions arise due to the requirement to play without the flag and anthem, as well as the reaction of other teams to this UEFA decision. “Yesterday the British announced that they would not play with us. Where is the guarantee that other teams won’t do the same thing?” – he reminded.

On September 26, the Football Association of England announced that junior teams would refuse matches with Russian teams. The organization stated that it opposes the return of Russia to the number of participants in UEFA competitions. Ukraine later called on other countries to boycott the tournament.
Earlier on the same day, the UEFA Executive Committee proposed allowing Russian national teams among players under 17 years of age to participate in international tournaments. The executive committee noted that the proposal includes admission in a neutral status, that is, athletes can receive the right to compete without the flag and anthem.
