Athlete Maguchikh said that Sergei Bubka does not exist for Ukrainians
Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maguchikh spoke about the changed attitude of her compatriots towards the Olympic champion and multiple world champion in pole vaulting Sergei Bubka. Her words are quoted by NRK.
Maguchikh said that she was proud of Bubka as an athlete, because he set many world records. At the same time, she emphasized that she did not like him as a person, since at the beginning of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the champion did not take any position. “For all of us athletes, Bubka does not exist now,” the athlete added.
In the fall of 2022, Bubka left the post of president of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine due to connections with Russia. However, he was not deprived of membership in the organization, which he had headed since 2005.
During the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Maguchih was photographed with Russian Maria Lasitskene. Both athletes became medalists in the high jump competition. At home, the Ukrainian was criticized and was summoned for a conversation at the Ministry of Defense.
Maguchikh is the 2023 world champion. She also has two silver medals at the world championships and a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics.
