ISU member Lakernik called Ukrainian skaters’ refusal to shake hands ugly
Honorary Vice-President of the International Skating Union (ISU) Alexander Lakernik appreciated the refusal of Ukrainian figure skaters Violetta Serova and Ivan Khobta to shake hands with the Georgian couple Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava at the Junior Grand Prix stage in Budapest. His words are quoted by Match TV.
Lakernik called the athletes’ behavior ugly, believing that elements of politics should not be introduced into sports. “At first they don’t greet Russians, now they don’t greet Georgians, and then where will we go?” asked the ISU member.
Metelkina and Berulava became the winners of the tournament in Budapest on September 24. During the award ceremony, the skaters approached Serova and Hobt for mutual congratulations, but they refused to shake their hands.
Metelkina has been playing for Georgia since 2020, Berulava since 2019. The couple trains in Russia with Pavel Slyusarenko.
