Roman Kostomarov said that he cried when he learned about the need for amputation

Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov spoke on NTV about how he reacted to the need for amputation.

“I didn’t realize the horror of everything that was happening until the chief doctor came. When he said: “We need your consent to amputate the feet. And also the hands. You can’t pull, we need urgent surgery,” the athlete said, adding that after that he began to cry. He shared that this terrible situation changed his life.

Earlier, Kostomarov spoke about the onset of the disease. He stated that he fell ill after the New Year holidays, having become infected from his wife Oksana Domnina. “I was coughing like a pipe, I couldn’t clear my throat. At home this continued, it started to hurt in my side, I realized that this was very suspicious,” the skater noted.

Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left.
