Kostomarov spoke about the onset of the disease

Olympic champion Kostomarov said that he climbed into an ice hole during an illness

Olympic champion in ice dancing Roman Kostomarov spoke on NTV about the onset of the disease.

The former athlete said that he fell ill after the New Year holidays, having become infected from his wife Oksana Domnina. “My shoulder hurt, an old injury. I started coughing. They gave me an injection, took painkillers, and everything seemed to go away—except for a cough, there were no symptoms,” he recalled.

Kostomarov noted that he drank a lot of painkillers, which weakened his immunity. However, he still went to his friends’ dacha, where he took a steam bath and climbed into an ice hole. “I was coughing like a pipe, I couldn’t clear my throat. At home this continued, it started to hurt in my side, I realized that this was very suspicious,” he added.

Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left.
