Mamiashvili called Ukrainian Filchakov’s refusal to take a photo with Gonibov at the World Cup stupid
The head of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR), Mikhail Mamiashvili, appreciated the refusal of the Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler Yaroslav Filchakov from a group photo with the Russian Aues Gonibov at the award ceremony of the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“It’s a pity for the guys, they get this stuff into their heads and intimidate them. All the athletes are standing, congratulating each other, but he turned away and left,” said Mamiashvili, calling such a decision stupid. He added that the Russian team supports Ukrainian wrestlers.
Filchakov’s refusal became known on September 22. He won bronze in the weight category up to 82 kilograms and left the podium. Before this, another Ukrainian wrestler, Vasily Mikhailov, did not take pictures with the Russian Akhmed Usmanov.
The World Championships, which are a qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, will end on September 24. Russians compete in neutral status.
