Cherchesov responded to Karpin’s call for national team players to go to Europe

Cherchesov said that the Russians’ play in Europe does not guarantee the team’s results

Former head coach of the Russian national team Stanislav Cherchesov responded to the call of the current coach of the national team Valery Karpin for his players to go to the European championships. Match TV reports this.

“The fact that the players play abroad is a plus, there are no minuses, but this does not mean that the Russian team or another national team will necessarily win something,” Cherchesov said. He cited the example of the 1990s, when many Russians played in top European clubs, but this did not guarantee good results for the team.

“But here are two tournaments where we more or less looked good. At Euro 2008 they took third and fourth place, there was only one Ivan Saenko, who competed abroad. Do you know how many of these there were at the 2018 World Cup? Two!” – added Cherchesov.

On September 12, Karpin called on Russian players to leave for European clubs. He noted that he advised leaving the Russian Premier League (RPL) many times. The coach added that he feels the difference between the level of the national team players who play in Europe and those who remain at home.
