Psychologist Marempolskaya said that Kostomarov has protracted depression syndrome
Clinical psychologist Tatyana Marempolskaya stated that Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov has protracted depression syndrome. Her words are quoted by Sport24.
“He is struggling, but it is clear that the severity of the depressive state is still present in a strong form. Most likely, it will take a lifetime to improve,” the doctor said. She added that things will get easier for the former athlete over time, so for now he needs to focus on his recovery.
On September 17, Kostomarov spoke about the difficulties of living with prostheses. He stated that no prosthetics could replace his arms and legs. Kostomarov also added that videos of his performances before the amputation brought him to tears.
Kostomarov was hospitalized on January 10 with pneumonia and influenza B. Due to prolonged connection to a blood oxygenation machine and a ventilator, his tissue began to die. Doctors amputated both feet of the skater, then the shins of both legs, the entire hand of his right hand and several fingers of his left.
