The International Olympic Committee (IOC) commented on the diplomatic boycotts of the 2022 Games in Beijing announced by a number of countries. The words of the IOC President Thomas Bach are quoted by TASS.
“The IOC is always concerned about the participation of athletes in the Olympic Games, so we welcome the support that has been given to the Olympic teams by their authorities,” Bach said. He noted that this position of the authorities gives confidence to athletes and corresponds to the Olympic truce.
On December 7, the IOC announced that the presence of official representatives of states at the Games is a purely political decision. The organization is neutral and recognizes this right. The committee approved that the athletes themselves will be able to decide on participation in the Olympic Games.
Earlier it became known that a number of countries will not send politicians to the Olympics in Beijing. The USA was the first to announce this, then Australia, Great Britain and Canada joined the diplomatic boycott.
The Winter Olympics in Beijing will be held from 4 to 20 February 2022. Only residents of the mainland of China will be able to attend the competition.
