Pozdnyakov called the Ukrainian wrestler’s refusal to take a photo with Usmanov schizophrenia
President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov appreciated Ukrainian freestyle wrestler Vasily Mikhailov’s refusal to be photographed with Russian Akhmed Usmanov at the 2023 World Championship (WCH) award ceremony in Belgrade. His words are quoted by TASS.
Pozdnyakov called what was happening schizophrenia. He recalled that the first scandal over a photo occurred at the Tokyo Olympics after Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Moguchikh and Russian Maria Lasitskene posed together.
Usmanov won the gold medal at the World Championships on September 18, after which silver medalist Vladimir Gamkrelidze from Georgia and bronze medalist Iranian Mohammad Nokhodi stood on the podium with the Russian for a joint photo. The Ukrainian, who also took third place, did not do this.
The World Championships, which are a qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, will end on September 24. Russians compete in neutral status.
