The Dutch Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) avoided Remco Evenepoel’s poker winning the Belgian the sprint that culminated the twentieth stage of the Vuelta a Españadisputed between Manzanares el Real and Guadarrama, 207.8 km, in which Sepp Kuss (Jumbo Visma) was proclaimed virtual winner of the round.

Poels took the duel to five in the Guadarrama sprint, signing his second great victory of the season. He attacked from afar and surprised Evenepoel, who was looking for the fourth stage, by centimeters.

The veteran Dutch runner raised his arms with a time of 4:59:29the same as Remco and the Asturian Pelayo Sánchez (Burgos BH), capable of achieving a creditable third place.

The favorites, without attacks, arrived at the finish line at 10:21 minutes with Juan Ayuso in front. On the straight, hugging each other, the first three overall, the magical Jumbo trio: Sepp Kuss, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic.

After the descent of the second pass through the Alto de Robledondo, the Soudal Quick-Step team activated the “stage operation”. There were 50 km left until the Guadarrama finish line and the Belgian formation had an absolute majority in the breakaway. Vervaeke, Cattaneo and Knox set the selection pace.

Victory was ahead, while tranquility reigned in the peloton, lapping at 9 minutes. The stage was being set for Remco’s fourth.

But it was not Soudal who threw the first stone, it was Bahrain with Wout Poels with a powerful attack on the cobbled streets of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. The Dutchman took Evenepoel, Van Eetvelt, Soler and Pelayo Sánchez to the wheel.

With a corner to go, Poels gained a few meters and made things difficult for Evenepoel, who reacted with enormous force. He was left with honey on his lips.

This Sunday the Vuelta ends with the dispute of the twenty-first stagebetween the La Zarzuela Racecourse and Madrid, with a route of 101.1 km.
