“Partner to counterbalance Russia”: the US promised to help Armenia make a “turn” towards the West

The United States wants Armenia to make a real decision to become a partner of Washington as opposed to Russia. This was stated by Acting US Under Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Yuri Kim, writes the Armenian News portal.

During a hearing on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh in the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Kim noted that after February 2022, countries neighboring Russia “began to doubt the issue of inviting Russian troops to the territories of their countries, on the issue of relying on Russia as a the only supplier of energy resources, on the issue of allowing the presence of the Russian military presence on its lands.”

Against this background, the United States has “an opportunity to develop relations with these countries.” “Our troops are in Armenia to conduct bilateral exercises for the first time, and we will continue to take advantage of this situation,” Kim added.

“We strive for Yerevan to become our partner as opposed to Russia. But to achieve this, we must be there. That’s why our support for Armenia and our partnership with Armenia is important,” explained the State Department representative.

She added that the United States is very vigilant and is now “closely monitoring events, increasing support for Armenia so that it makes the turn that it wants.”
