UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Croatia over fan protest

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Croatian Football Union (HNS) over fan action at a group stage qualifying match for the 2024 European Championship. Associated Press reports.

On September 8, during a meeting between the national teams of Croatia and Latvia, fans hung the flag of the Ustasha movement (Croatian far-right nationalist organization – approx. “Tapes.ru”). Stadium security officers arrested the violators. The Croatian national team may play its next home match on October 12 against Turkey without spectators, as UEFA previously issued a warning to HNS for a similar violation.

The match on September 8 ended in victory for the Croatian team with a score of 5:0. Luka Ivanushec, Andrej Kramaric, Mario Pasalic and Bruno Petkovic scored a brace. Croatia is currently in first place in the Group D standings with 10 points. Latvia is in fifth place, without scoring a single point.

The group stage of the Euro 2024 qualifying tournament will end on November 21, 2023. The current European football champion is the Italian national team. In the final match, the team beat England in a penalty shootout.
