Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin spoke about the position of the National Hockey League (NHL) on the participation of Russians in LGBT actions. His words are quoted by Izvestia.

The striker praised the league for its attitude towards the Russians’ refusal to participate in these events. “Well, what can I say here? Well done. It would be like this everywhere. How long will the NHL last? I don’t know. This question is not for me,” he said.

Earlier, league commissioner Gary Bettman announced that next season the NHL decided to abandon the mandatory use of LGBT-supporting jerseys by hockey players during warm-ups.

During the 2022/2023 season, the Minnesota Wild, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers refused to participate in the promotions. In addition, Russian hockey players Ivan Provorov from the Philadelphia Flyers and Ilya Lyubushkin from the Buffalo Sabers did not wear rainbow uniforms.
